This article looks at the relationship between Clara Schumann, Augusta Holmès, and Dame Ethel Smyth how their knowledge of one another’s place in history informs our understanding compositional output. The canonic significance attributed to Schumann idea “the first woman compose large symphonic works” will be discussed relation modern writings on female canons creative writing. In addition, this essay present an analysis feminist political implications Holmès’s opera La Montagne Noire Smyth’s Wreckers. How Holmès chose depict women these operas examined against musicological criticism genre composers’ own politics.
